Invisalign is an alternative to traditional braces. Braces use wires, elastics, brackets, and other components to put pressure on your teeth and move them into the proper position. Invisalign does the same thing. However, it uses a set of clear, plastic “aligners.” These look sort of like a retainer or a mouthguard.
But unlike braces, Invisalign is removable. That means you can maintain your normal diet, and it’s easier to brush and floss. Invisalign is also completely invisible and does not affect your speech or appearance. This makes it a great option for older patients who may not want to wear braces.
After you’re approved for treatment, your dentist at Bria Dental will develop a personalized Invisalign treatment plan for you. Then, you’ll come into our office to pick up your first few sets of aligners.
Each hard plastic aligner is designed to exert gentle pressure on your teeth. Over time, this moves them into the proper position. Rather than tightening your braces, you’ll simply swap to a new set of aligners about every 2 weeks. You’ll wear your aligners for about 20-22 hours per day, removing them only to eat and drink, and to brush and floss.
You’ll need to come into our office every 4-6 weeks for a quick checkup with your dentist. Then, you’ll get your next few sets of aligners and instructions on how to wear them. This same basic process will be repeated until your treatment is complete!
During your treatment, you’ll need to keep brushing and flossing your teeth normally. You should also take steps to care for your clear aligners. First, you should rinse them whenever you take them out of your mouth. If you’re not at home, make sure to store them in your provided carrying case to keep them safe and avoid losing them.
Every night, you should also brush your aligners with a toothbrush to keep them clean. We also recommend using denture cleaner or Invisalign cleaning crystals to clean your aligners. Soaking your aligners helps sanitize and disinfect them. This keeps them clear and prevents clouding, and also helps prevent the buildup of bacteria.
Invisalign can treat most minor-to-moderate orthodontic problems. This includes gaps between the teeth, crowded teeth, uneven teeth, and crooked teeth. It may also be possible to treat bite problems like an overbite or an underbite with Invisalign.
However, Invisalign is not quite as powerful or versatile as traditional braces. If you have severe orthodontic problems, braces may be a better option in your situation. The best way to find out if Invisalign is right for you is to visit Bria Dental for an orthodontic consultation with Dr. Chang, Dr. Maxwell, or Dr. Ley.
